Just thought I’d update this thread ……………….. Tonka went back to see Jade (my vet) yesterday and we’re all really pleased with his progress.
He weighed a whopping 78g yesterday and his front paw looks excellent - it is almost completely healed and he is not going to need any surgery unless there is bone infection present (which does not seem to be the case at the moment).
He was very popular at the vets and Jade and the veterinary nurse had good long cuddles with him - Tonka, of course, thoroughly enjoyed the attention - at one point he was clambering over Jade peeping softly to her all the while - I think Jade could have stayed there with him all evening
So here he is ………………

and here is his amazing paw

Little “Tonka” (as my Mum has nick-named him
) is doing very well. Amazingly his front paw is healing and I doubt he will need surgery unless he gets an infection. If he gets an infection he is still at risk of losing his leg and/or sepsis (blood infection) - so still early days.
He is taking his Septrin like a good boy (he’s not started spitting it yet
) and has put on 4g every day for the last 3!! He currently weighs 62g

Here are a few photos of Bear’s kit - he’s not easy to photograph because he does not sit still for long - chinchilla kits are remarkably resilient.

…….
Not that Bear’s fed up at all

……………
Having a damaged paw is not stopping him.

Having a scratch can prove a little tricky on the balance

Hiding under Mummy.

Hello? Am I cute or what?

And finally ……….. in his usual position! He certainly knows how to feed.

Well, little man’s survived another night and is perky (in fact, I think he’s driving Bear nuts already
). He is tolerating his minute dose of Septrin and has put on 1g this morning (not holding my breath on that one though because his weight will fluctuate during the day).
I will see if I can get a photo or two of him later - that is if he sits still long enough
So far so good……………..

My little fella is precocious - I was watching him trying to climb the cage walls in the middle of the night!
I’ve managed some sleep as every 2 hours last night he was tucked upside down under his mum suckling - so I left him and continued to monitor him. I’ve fed him several times today but only a few drops at a time so he continues to stimulate milk production in Bear. He has lost a little weight but that is to be expected - Bear’s milk should be coming in and with the top-ups I am giving him he should start to pick up a bit.
His foot is not looking quite so bad as it did - no signs of infection as yet which is encouraging
Bear is being pretty good with him except her handling leaves a little to be desired - she’s a little rough and tends to sit on him rather than tucking him underneath her
She’s quite attentive which is good.
I have to give him a minute dose of Septrin twice a day (0.016ml) which equates to the tiniest drop from the end of a syringe - he had his first dose this evening and I think he liked it - he was grinding his little teeth for ages afterwards
Will keep you posted - just wish my brain was working!!
